McConaughey Possibly Targeted for New Nolan Film?

In a report posted Thursday afternoon on Deadline.com, author Mike Fleming Jr. says he has been “told” that Christopher Nolan is interested in bringing Matthew McConaughey on board for his upcoming film “Interstellar.”

Fleming says McConaughey would play Cooper, the protagonist in the time travel flick that Nolan is co-writing with his brother Jonathan Nolan. Jonathan was writing the script for Steven Spielberg before Spielberg backed out on the project in early January.

Deadline thinks McConaughey is a near lock to be Nolan’s lead, citing “who says no to Nolan?” While people have said no to Nolan in the past (most notably Matt Damon turning down the role to play Harvey Dent in “The Dark Knight”), it does seem it will be difficult to turn down one of the biggest directors in Hollywood.

The information should be taken with a grain of salt since Fleming gives no credit to the person he got the details from, but it is an intriguing possibility nonetheless.

Personally, I don’t think McConaughey is a great fit, but I know way too little about the script to say that definitively. Nonetheless, he is exactly the type of A-list actor that Nolan needs to work with to make his next big blockbuster.

He has climbed the ladder quickly during the past year, starring in “Mud,” “Magic Mike” and the upcoming Martin Scorsese film “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

It should be interesting to see how the rest of the “Interstellar” cast fills out in the coming months.
